| Dearly beloved, we are gathered tonight to witness the marriage of Wesley Masters and Lana Upton. The wedding ceremony took place earlier and now everyone is attending the reception to celebrate the devoted love between these two caring people…and yet, things are not what they seem.
From the start, this is no ordinary wedding reception. As the audience, you are the guests, and as such, are greeted by the wedding party upon arrival. Angela Masters (Laurie Dunlap), is the mother of the groom Wesley (Michael Cropper), who is the heir to “Fifth Avenue Chocolates”, a company worth millions. Mama is not particularly happy with her son’s nuptuals, due mainly to her dislike of the bride (Lisa Matthews). The whole affair is “graciously” put together by a friend of the bride, Sheila Darling (Bethany Blakey). Once the best man and DJ Kenny Diamond (Hans Bachmann) introduces the bride and groom to the guests, murder and mayhem begins. A detective (Dan Orenge), working security at the reception, secures the crime scene and starts to question the wedding party, and guests. The purpose of this procedure is to determine the intended victim, discover the reason for such a ghastly deed, gather proof of guilt, and expose the murderer, by uncovering clues, listening intently to conversations, and arriving at inevitable conclusions. Gossip columnist Steve Gecco flits around the room, dropping hints and conversing with guests, while trying to circulate theories. The evening consisted of endless amusement, in as much as the cast goes to considerable lengths to garner audience participation that really keeps the entertainment moving, and all the actors are expert at playing the room. At one point, four girls are chosen from the “guests” and are taught a short choreographed dance that they perform as bridesmaids, while Kenny sings a love song to the happy couple. Additionally, others are called to be columnists from prominent newspapers who deliver clues to the audience in order to provide more information for solving the murder. The entire audience seemed to have an enjoyable time. The show was written by two of the first class performers, Laurie Dunlap, and Hans Bachmann. It’s a clever plot, and well executed.
